Missing Maps

CASUI

Missing Maps is a virtual volunteering opportunity, which provides you with the ability to map buildings, roads, and areas that are visible from satellite imagery but not seen in professional maps. The areas that usually need mapping are in third world countries and in places where a response from the red cross or other organizations is needed. Using this, you provide such organizations with more quality maps that help them respond to locations in need of help more quickly and efficiently as they now have maps with roads and buildings specified on them.

In order to participate you must first go through a short 10 minute tutorial, which teaches you how to map and use the website. And after that you are free to choose from thousands of projects that need mapping. This month I chose to help with a project in Cusco, Peru. It was a COVID-19 response project. Here are the details:

“Missing maps is mapping Cusco region in Peru at the request of regional government to support their COVID-19 response efforts. The maps will be used to provide cash transfers to families who are prevented from working by the quarantine and State of Emergency in Peru, and to provide nutrition and sanitation assistance.”

In my opinion this is a great way to engage more with global issues and to recognize their importance by helping them at the same time. And it’s also amazing how people that have computers can help out a lot by sparing an hour or two of their time for a few days.
