Missing maps provided me with a great opportunity to volunteer when quarantined. It almost feels like playing a game, because all you do is mark buildings and roads and in the end that helps people out. This concept to me is so strange, because there are these global issues that you constantly hear about and using this website you get to see the exact place where it is happening, and the conditions that people have to survive in. And since you are doing this from the safety of your own home it feels like this is the least you can do to help.
I told a few of my friends about this website and encouraged them to try it out as in my opinion, it is honestly one of the best virtual volunteering websites.
This time I helped out with mapping flood risk zones where global warming is affecting the weather patterns which also helped me engage with issues that I learned about in geography:
“Burkina Faso is exposed to the effects of climate change. Hydrological risks, particularly floods, are a major concern in land use planning and management. In Burkina Faso’s Kénédougou province, floods are one of the most dramatic manifestations of hydro-climatic variability. Indeed, the upward trend in rainfall seen in recent years has resulted in exceptionally serious disasters. The international organization Action Against Hunger (ACF) is among the oldest to deal with this issue in Burkina Faso. It is planning the production of geographical data in the three communes of Kénédougou (Kayan, Morolaba and Kourouma) in order to prepare a response to disasters that could occur in the areas concerned.”
